This Sunday, we'll be reflecting on one of the most well-known and powerful stories in the Gospel of John.
At first glance, this story appears to be about a woman caught in adultery. Yet it soon becomes clear that the deeper issue is not her sin, but the hearts of those who condemn her. Jesus shifts the spotlight from the woman to the religious leaders, exposing their hypocrisy, selective justice, public shaming, and self-righteousness. The one on trial is no longer the woman, but those convinced of their own innocence.
Standing between the woman and her accusers, Jesus absorbs the hostility of the crowd, disarms the power of condemnation, and shields her from both public humiliation and personal shame. In their place, he offers her a path to freedom, restoration, and new life.
