Born and raised in Vancouver, John is passionate about serving God and people through music and creative expression. He longs for people to encounter God in deep and meaningful ways, especially through the power of worship and the arts. Alongside this, he also believes deeply in the local church’s call to be the presence of Christ in its neighbourhood—and longs to see the church be a hub of transformation in the community through connection, service, love and hospitality – especially toward those on the margins.
John is a versatile musician with extensive training and experience across a wide range of musical styles. He studied at the Vancouver Academy of Music, pursued jazz studies at Concordia University in Montreal, and completed a Master of Music in Choral Conducting at the University of Washington.
Before joining Peace, John held various roles in both academic and church settings. He has taught music at the high school and college levels, and served in worship ministries across several traditions—including Alliance, Baptist, Presbyterian, and Plymouth Brethren churches. He is excited to now be serving within the Mennonite (Anabaptist) tradition.
A gifted composer, arranger, pianist, singer, conductor, and recording artist, John thrives on collaborating with musicians and artists in community. He and his wife Dorothy have three children—two daughters and a son—and when he's not making music, he loves being outdoors: camping, hiking, kayaking, and swimming.
