The request for places at Jesus’ right and left hand reflects a common understanding of power and honor — shaped by status, entitlement, and the expectation of being served by others. Jesus exposes this distorted vision of authority and radically redefines power. In his kingdom, true greatness is not found in privilege, control or ruling over others, but in self-giving service. Real power is the willingness to use one’s position and resources to serve others and seek their flourishing before one’s own. Jesus had power, but he used it to serve.
